WHU’s Leadership Essentials Program explores the key elements of leadership, asking how leadership is different from management and by comparing effective and ineffective leadership behaviors. During the 3-day interactive development program, you will develop the skills you need to motivate, and coach and assess people to get them on-board with your goals and strategies.
We use exercises, group work, and case studies to practice behaviors of highly effective leaders. The program concludes with reflections on what you have learned and a forward plan that will help you apply the insights you gained during the program. You will receive a WHU Executive Education Certificate after successfully completing the program.

Your program at a glance
You will start the program by focusing on your personal situation, identifying the reasons why you want to be a leader and why others should follow you. Through exploring behavioral patterns that distinguish highly effective leaders, you will create an understanding of the various leadership concepts, helping you to develop your own authentic leadership style. Comparing transformational and transactional leadership will show why these two are interrelated, and where the power of charisma comes into play when leading others. The importance of the relationship between leaders and followers will be highlighted by discussing how emotional intelligence matters when striving for high-quality relationships.
Second, you will learn about the difficulties of taking action and responsibility, how to overcome hurdles and deal with emotional intelligence, negative feedback, and conflict. By clarifying the effect of emotions on teams, the acceleration trap will be introduced, and fortunately, also guidelines on how to break free from this trap and prevent it from happening again.
We go through questions concerning how you can put your insights and thoughts into action, developing the skills you need to motivate, and coach and assess people to get them on-board with your goals and strategies. You will be familiarized with state-of-the-art thinking on leadership, research outcomes from over 100 years of leadership research.
Finally, you will be introduced to useful tools and concepts that will help you to develop, refine, and reflect on your own leadership.
